All you need to do is to create your own brush from text. This you can do in new document where you need to type your text with black color and white or transparent background. Then go to Edit -> Define Brush preset.

Now you have brush from your text so you can go to your project and start with your Dispersion effect.  Watch whole process in my tutorial:

Lightness: -31

1. Use dark background – it is because white smoke looks much better on darker background than on light one.

2. Use good smoke images – some images with smoke are not good for your project because background is not black, just dark gray. So when you use screen layer mode you will see something like ghost rectangle on every single layer copy. You can edit these resources by using adjustment layer – levels and make dark colors darker.

3. Use different smoke types – result will be more reliable.
